32-yr-old man dies after jackal bite, kin allege vaccine shortage
PRAYAGRAJ, July 25 -- A 32-year-old man from Girdharpur village in the Manda Khas area of Prayagraj district died on Thursday morning after being bitten by a jackal earlier this month.
The victim, Jitendra Kumar Adivasi, was one of several villagers attacked by a jackal on the night of July 1.
His family claimed that he died because of the unavailability of the Human Immunoglobulin (IgG) vaccine at Colvin Hospital in Prayagraj. Jitendra and others had first received basic treatment at the Manda Community Health Centre (CHC).Doctors referred them to Colvin Hospital, but the family said staff there informed them the IgG vaccine was unavailable, so the patients were sent back.
Some villagers bought the costly vaccine from the market and recovered, but Jitendra couldn't afford it. His condition worsened on Tuesday night, and he was taken to Manda CHC again, where he was referred to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital in Prayagraj.
After receiving primary treatment there, he was referred to PGI in Lucknow. Doctors at PGI, however, reportedly refused to admit him due to his critical condition. The family brought him back home on Wednesday night. He died the next morning. His wife, Nisha Devi, said her husband could have been saved if the vaccine had been available at the hospital.
Dr Suman Chaudhary, chief medical superintendent of Colvin Hospital, said that while the government provides the anti-rabies vaccine, it does not supply the more expensive IgG injection.
Those in need must buy it from the market, she added. The incident has raised concerns about vaccine availability and the treatment of animal bite cases in government hospitals.htc...
