300 structures identified for demolition in nainital district
Haldwani, Dec. 22 -- In a major infrastructure drive, the Nainital district administration has identified more than 300 permanent and semi-permanent structures - including key government offices - for demolition to make way for a road-widening project between Teenpani and Nariman Chowk in Haldwani, officials said on Sunday.
The plan will require the removal of several private and government-owned buildings along the route. The project, aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion and improving connectivity on one of Haldwani's busiest arterial stretches, will widen the existing 12-14 km road by 12 metres on either side from the centre line.
Haldwani sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Rahul Shah said the revenue department has completed identifying encroachments, and the process of forwarding the consolidated list to the municipal corporation and the public works department (PWD) is under way. "Once the list is formally handed over, the municipal corporation and the PWD will begin issuing notices to property owners whose buildings fall within the road-widening limits," Shah said.
In the first phase of the survey, revenue teams identified 173 encroachments between Teenpani and Honda Chowk in the Transport Nagar area. "Subsequently, the identification work was extended to the remaining stretch up to Nariman Chowk. With the completion of the second phase, the total number of encroachments has crossed 300," the SDM said.
"Government structures such as the DM camp office, SDM court, municipal offices, and the electricity and water works departments have also been identified within the road-widening limits. After the list is handed over, issuing notices and taking further action will be the responsibility of the municipal corporation and the PWD," Shah added....
