Meerut, Sept. 1 -- A 30-year-old inmate took his life by hanging himself in the barracks of Bareilly District Jail (Central Jail-II) on Friday night. Two jail staff members were suspended and a departmental inquiry against a third has been initiated by the jail authorities. The deceased, a resident of Gagol village under Partapur police station in Meerut, was the nephew of a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader in Meerut. He had been convicted of serious charges, including attempted murder and molestation, and was serving a life sentence. The deceased had faced multiple charges, including attempted murder, dacoity, and acid attack. On January 14, 2021, a Meerut court sentenced him to life imprisonment. He was transferred from Meerut Jail to Bareilly District Jail on February 2 this year. According to jail authorities, he used a piece of cloth to create a noose and hanged himself from a latch on the barracks' gate. The incident, captured on CCTV, revealed that two fellow inmates witnessed the event but did not intervene. The footage also exposed lapses in oversight by jail staff. Senior jail superintendent Vipin Mishra stated that the deceased had made a similar attempt earlier that evening, and jail staff had counseled him but failed to remove the cloth he later used to take his life. Following a preliminary investigation, head jail warder Rajendra Singh and jail warder Praveen Chaudhary were suspended for failing to perform their duties adequately. Additionally, disciplinary action was recommended against jail warder Rajesh Kumar for negligence. DIG Jail Kuntal Kishor conducted an inspection of the barracks to assess the situation. Upon receiving the news, jail authorities and police officials promptly arrived at the scene, and the body was sent for a post-mortem examination. CO Highway Shivam Ashutosh confirmed that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The deceased inmate's uncle claimed that the molestation charge against his nephew was falsely imposed as part of a vendetta, and the family's inability to effectively pursue the case led to his conviction. He noted that an appeal was pending in a higher court....
