3 kanwariyas held for assaulting CRPF jawan at Mirzapur rly station
VARANASI, July 20 -- Three kanwariyas were arrested for assaulting a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan following an altercation over buying tickets at the Mirzapur railway station on Saturday, police said.
In a purported video of the incident, the group of kanwariyas can be seen brutally punching and kicking the jawan. HT has seen the video but not independently verified its authenticity.
Those arrested by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) were identified as Satyam, Abhishek Sahu and Abhay Tiwari.
RPF in-charge Inspector Chaman Singh Tomar said, "Three people who beat up the CRPF jawan have been arrested and challaned. There was a dispute at the ticket counter over buying tickets."
Inspector Raghavendra Singh of the GRP police station, Mirzapur, said, "A case under sections 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered against four persons, including three named and one unidentified, based on the complaint. The accused were arrested."
The CRPF jawan Gautam Kumar, resident of Khutahan under Dehat Kotwali police station limits of Mirzapur, is posted in Manipur, according to people aware of the matter.
The incident took place when the CRPF jawan reached the counter to book a ticket to board the Brahmaputra Mail. A group of people, including kanwariyas and devotees, were present at the counter and wanted to buy tickets to visit Baidyanath Dham, which has a prominent Shiva temple, by the same train, an RPF officer said.
People present at the station informed that the altercation between kanwariyas and the jawan over who would book the tickets first took an ugly turn leading to a clash, the officer said. There were at least seven kanwariyas, including four supposed minors, at the site of the incident, people aware of the matter said. The police have not confirmed any action against the supposed minors.
The kanwariyas allegedly beat up the CRPF jawan, the officer said, quoting eyewitnesses.
The officer said a team led by assistant sub inspector of RPF Pradeep Kumar Pal and Government Railway Police personnel reached the spot with a heavy force and freed the CRPF jawan from the kanwariyas.
Satyam, Abhishek Sahu and Abhay Tiwari, were caught and brought to the RPF police station. The RPF registered a case of assault against all three and arrested them.
