Dehradun, July 3 -- Three kanwariyas were killed and 18 others injured when the truck they were travelling in overturned near Khedi on the Rishikesh-Chamba highway in Tehri Garhwal on Wednesday morning, an official said. The official said that the truck was on its way from Sikandrabad in Bulandshahr of Uttar Pradesh to Dharali (18 kms before Gangotri Dham) in Uttarkashi to organise a "bhandara" when the truck overturned near Khedi, approximately 42 kms from Rishikesh at around 10.15 am. "Twently one people were travelling in the vehicle. As the truck overturned, the victims were trapped under the vehicle. We used multiple JCBs to take them out. Three kanwariyas died in the accident. Rescue teams involving state disaster response force (SDRF) personnel carried out relief and rescue operations. Two of the injured with serious injuries were rushed to AIIMS Rishikesh, while other injured have been admitted in Narendra Nagar hospital," said Nitika Khandelwal, Tehri Garhwal district magistrate. "For now, we can't say for certain what caused the accident. The vehicle overturned on the edge of the road and was prevented from plunging into the gorge by the crash barrier. The injured individuals I spoke to said the brakes failed while navigating a turn," she said.
