Meerut, Nov. 25 -- The Muzaffarnagar police have suspended three cops after an inquiry confirmed the allegations of harassment made by a youth who attempted self-immolation. Mohd Anas, 22, who suffered severe burns, accused local policemen of extortion, intimidation, and physical assault. According to officials, SSP Sanjay Verma suspended sub-inspector Ram Avatar along with constables Bhupendra Singh and Vikas Kumar, with immediate effect. The action is based on the preliminary report submitted by SP (rural) Aditya Bansal, which found the role and conduct of the officers "suspicious and inappropriate." On November 19, Anas, a resident of Husainpur Kalan, poured petrol on himself and set himself ablaze. He sustained more than 70% burns and is currently undergoing treatment at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital. A day later, a video of the critically injured youth went viral on social media, in which he levelled serious accusations against the police. In the video, Anas alleged that the policemen were pressuring him to pay Rs.5 lakh. He claimed they had already taken Rs.50,000 from him, and upon failing to pay the remaining amount, he was threatened of being framed in a false case and even being shot in the leg. He said this relentless intimidation drove him to take the extreme step. The video sparked public outrage, prompting the district administration to order an inquiry led by SP (rural). Early findings revealed that Anas runs a mobile repair shop in nearby Luhsana village. Days earlier, police had detained a youth known to him in a theft case and questioned Anas as well, but he was released due to lack of evidence. Despite Anas's allegations, a video surfaced the next day featuring his father, who denied the claims and stated that his son was under mental stress and had levelled false accusations against the cops. However, the inquiry report contradicted the father's denial. SP (rural's) findings substantiated multiple claims made by Anas, indicating misconduct and questionable behaviour by the accused policemen. Their handling of the case was deemed improper and indicative of harassment. Following the findings, SSP Verma ordered the suspension of all three policemen and sought a detailed follow-up report. Departmental proceedings have also been initiated against the officers. SSP Sanjay Verma stressed that corruption, pressure tactics, or mistreatment by any police personnel will not be tolerated. "Wrongdoing at any level within the department will face strict action. This incident raises serious questions about police accountability and conduct," he said....
