KANPUR, May 2 -- At least 25 passengers were injured on Friday morning when a private bus overturned while attempting to overtake another vehicle in Farrukhabad district, officials said. The bus, carrying around 60 passengers from Harpalpur in Hardoi district, was headed towards Panchal ghat for a Ganga dip on the occasion of Buddha Purnima when the accident occurred near Raghunathpur village. According to local officials, the driver was speeding and lost control during the manoeuvre, causing the vehicle to overturn. Police and local residents pulled trapped passengers out of the bus. Eleven of the injured were taken by ambulance to Lohia hospital, where nine were admitted while two were discharged after first aid, SDM, sadar, Rajnikant Pandey said. Several passengers had reportedly asked the driver to slow down before the accident, but he continued at speed. In a separate allegation, a passenger's family claimed that cash and jewellery lost in the aftermath of the crash were picked up by a policeman at the scene but not returned. Rahul, whose mother Umakanti was among the injured, alleged that the officer asked them to collect the items later from the police station, but subsequently denied having them.
