Dehradun/Haldwani, July 13 -- A 22-year-old woman, who was allegedly on her way to dump 5.688 kg drugs worth Rs.10.23 crore in a river, was arrested near the Nepal border on Saturday, police said. "At around 5.45 am, a 14-member joint police team of Champawat and Pithoragarh police, led by DSP Tanakpur Vandana Verma, was carrying out a checking drive near the Sharada river close to the Nepal border, when they spotted the accused running towards the Sharda river carrying a black backpack," said Ajay Ganpati Kumbhar, Champawat senior superintendent of police (SSP). "Because of the suspicious behaviour, the team searched her and recovered 5.688 kg MDMA from her. It was confirmed that the substance recovered was a drug using the drug detection kit. A case was registered against the woman at Banbasa police station under relevant sections of the NDPS Act," he said. He further said that the contraband was concealed in two packets - 3.4245 kg (brown crystal-like substance) in the first packet and 2.2635 kg (white granular substance) in the second packet. The officer said that the woman was identified as Isha (goes by single name), a resident of Banbasa, wife of Rahul Kumar, an accused involved in operation of a clandestine drug manufacturing unit in Pithoragarh that was busted by Pune police last month. On June 1, Thane police had arrested two people - Vishal Singh and Mallesh Shevla - following recovery of 10.93 grams of mephedrone valued at Rs.35,000. They revealed to the police that they had procured the banned substance from Uttarakhand. A team of Thane police on June 26 raided a clandestine drug manufacturing unit and seized machinery, chemicals, and other raw materials in Pithoragarh's Thal. Three people involved in the operations of the unit were arrested near the Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh's Kheri district. They were identified as Om Gupta, and Amar Kohli, residents of Tanakar from Uttarakhand, and Bheem Yadav, a resident of Nallasopara in Mumbai. The SSP said Isha revealed during interrogation that she was given the contraband by her husband and his friend Kunal Kohli, resident of Tanakpur, on June 27, as they feared being caught amid increasing police surveillance. "We are searching for Rahul Kumar and Kunal Kohli, involved in the operations of the drug unit in Pithoragarh," he said....
