22 hospitalised over breathing problems
Jaipur, Nov. 24 -- At least 22 people including a dozen of school students in Sikar were hospitalised on Saturday night after they suffered severe breathing problems and chest pain in the RIICO industrial area at city's Jaipur road, officials said.
According to officials, the incident took place at 8pm. "Several people suddenly suffered a severe breathing problem, many also reported chest pain. Although a few got stable in a few minutes, at least 22 had to be rushed to the hospital," said the additional district magistrate Ratan Kumar.
Officials also said the 22 patients also included 12 students from a nearby school. "They were at their hostel when they fell sick. All of them were admitted to the SK Hospital in the district. As their health got better, many of them were also discharged on Sunday morning while the rest are still under the supervision." However, all of them are stable, said officials.
Kumar said, "The reason is not clear yet. However, we are suspecting that some toxic gas had been leaked from a factory which is close to the school and spread across the area."
According to officials, the factory staff on Saturday night started burning old clothes. "Police are searching for the factory owner whose phone has been switched off since last night," said Kumar.
"Police are also inspecting the area and trying to trace if the mishap was caused by any other toxic chemical. A team of pollution control board has also been called to inspect the situation. Necessary action will be taken accordingly," he added....
