2007 playbook to guide Maya's 2027 strategy
LUCKNOW, Oct. 17 -- Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Thursday outlined the party's 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly election strategy as she emphasised the need to consolidate the party's core Dalit vote base while reaching out to other communities under the inclusive slogan "Sarvajan Hitay, Sarvajan Sukhay", (welfare for all) a strategy that propelled the party to victory in the 2007 elections when it formed a majority government.
Addressing a key meeting at the state unit office, she also directed party leaders and office bearers to strengthen the organisation at the grass roots to regain power in Uttar Pradesh, begin booth-level mobilisation and showcase the achievements of previous BSP governments.
Buoyed by the massive turnout at the October 9 rally in Lucknow marking the death anniversary of party founder Kanshi Ram, Mayawati announced plans for another grand show of strength on her birthday, January 15, 2026. The BSP will celebrate the day as Jankalyankari Diwas across all districts, with events aimed at energising the cadre and sending a strong message to supporters and rivals alike. Once marked by a mega show during the BSP's tenure in power, Mayawati's birthday events had been scaled down in recent years with programmes limited to the party office.
However, with an eye on the 2027 polls, she has called for a return to district-wide mobilisation and urged supporters to contribute to the party coffers as part of the celebrations.
She instructed leaders to highlight the development and welfare schemes launched during BSP's four terms in government to win public support.
"The October 9 rally has set the pitch for our comeback," she declared.
Mayawati also announced plans to personally review organisational work through surprise district visits, with a focus on booth committees. She set a deadline of December-end for completing the groundwork, promising key posts to hardworking and loyal workers while warning of removal for underperformance.
BSP national convenor Akash Anand, currently engaged in the Bihar assembly elections, did not attend Thursday's meeting.
Mayawati praised the "commendable missionary contribution" of party workers in ensuring the success of the October 9 rally. She justified her praise of the BJP government over the upkeep of the Kanshi Ram Memorial in Lucknow.
"The expression of gratitude shows political honesty, but the SP did not like it as such virtues are not in its character," she added. She hit out at the SP and Congress for alleging misuse of government machinery to transport BSP workers to the rally, asserting that rallyists arrived using their own resources. Mayawati further criticised the SP government for erasing Dalit legacies by renaming districts and institutions and undermining reservation benefits and welfare schemes initiated by BSP. She likened these actions to the June 2, 1995 guest house incident, calling it another "black chapter" in the SP's history. Reaffirming BSP's commitment to Ambedkarite ideals, she said the party does not rely on capitalist funding or political tricks.
Meanwhile, Mayawati will hold the second round of a review meeting on October 19....
