2006 dacoity casediaries vanish from PS, cop booked
LUCKNOW, Sept. 15 -- In a major lapse in police record-keeping, case diaries linked to a 2006 dacoity case have gone missing from Madiyaon police station, prompting Lucknow Police to file an FIR against a policeman responsible for their custody.
According to officials, the case had been under investigation for years, with a final report filed in June 2015. In July 2018, the complete set of 87 case diaries, 40 supplementary reports, and the final report were dispatched from the circle officer's office in Aliganj for court submission.
The records were received by head constable Surya Bhan who logged their return in the general diary before passing them to another head constable Rajendra Singh, in charge of dak work. Singh is said to have handed them over to constable Pradeep Mishra who was responsible for criminal records at the time.
However, no evidence exists to confirm that the documents ever reached court. A preliminary inquiry has held constable Mishra responsible for failing to ensure their submission.
On the directions of the deputy commissioner of police (North), Lucknow, an FIR was registered against Pradeep Mishra on September 12 (Friday) under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, on the complaint of Madiyaon police station house officer Shivanand Mishra.
Senior officials said a probe is underway to determine how such crucial records vanished. "The disappearance of case diaries from police custody not only jeopardises the integrity of the 2006 trial but also reflects serious lapses in file management and accountability," said an officer familiar with the matter....
