2 killed by speeding pickup truck
VARANASI, June 9 -- Two people were killed after being hit by a speeding pickup truck near a Sugar Mill in Ghosi Kotwali police station area of Mau district on Sunday, police said.
A police officer said the deceased has been identified as Jagtu (50), a resident of Daulatpur in Ghosi Kotwali area. He used to sell lemon water and was on his way to Ghosi on Sunday morning, on his bicycle, to get a slab of ice as per his routine. As he approached the sugar mill, a speeding pickup truck coming from Dohrighat hit him, the officer added.
The police officer said that nearby residents rushed to the scene and attempted to apprehend the pickup driver. However, the driver tried to escape by reversing the vehicle, hitting Khushi Modanwal (16), a resident of Baragaon who was walking to coaching classes, before fleeing the spot. After the accident, people rushed both injured individuals to Ghosi Community Health Center, where doctors declared Jagtu and Khushi dead.
The police officer said that CCTV footage has been reviewed, and efforts are underway to identify the vehicle and driver who fled the scene....
