Kochi, July 28 -- Two Catholic nuns from Kerala were arrested in Chhattisgarh on charges of human trafficking and forced conversions, with the incident triggering a political uproar as chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention in ensuring justice to the two nuns. The two nuns, identified as Preethy Mary and Vandana Francis, were among three arrested by police at the Durg railway station on Friday for attempting to take three woman to Agra under the false promise of jobs, an official said. "Initially, they were told they would be offered jobs within Chhattisgarh but when they reached Durg, they were suddenly asked to travel to Agra and nuns were present in Durg to take them further," the official said on anonymity. Following the arrest, Vijayan sent a letter to the PM seeking his direct intervention in the matter, a CMO statement said. The nuns were taken into custody when they went to pick those who came for job in their convent, Vijayan said. Earlier in the day, Congress leader KC Venugopal cited the incident as the latest example of attacks against minorities in the BJP-ruled states. "Attacks on minorities have seen a rampant increase under BJP-ruled States, be it Chhattisgarh, Odisha or MP," he said on X....
