Bhopal, Sept. 3 -- Two newborn babies were bitten by rats while undergoing treatment at a government-run hospital in Madhya Pradesh's Indore district, officials said on Tuesday, adding that one of them, a 10-day-old girl, died of pneumonia while the other infant was stable. The incident took place at the Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital (MYH) in Indore, officials said. Dr Arvind Ghanghoria, dean of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College, said the girl was undergoing treatment at the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for congenital problems. He added that she was found abandoned in Khargone district and was brought to the hospital. Preliminary examination found rat bites on the head and the shoulder of the girl. "The newborn girl, weighing only 1.20 kg, was already in a critical condition and was put on life support system," Ghanghoria said. In the second case, the fingers of a 15-day-old undergoing treatment at the NICU were found bitten. The infant is currently stable and receiving treatment, officials said.
