2 held for drugging passengers, robbing them
Haridwar, June 27 -- Two people have been arrested for allegedly drugging passengers and looting them on trains, by the Government Railway Police (GRP) from Rishikesh, officials said on Thursday. The arrests come in connection with a recent case where eight women pilgrims from Indore were robbed after being offered cold drinks laced with sedatives during their journey.
GRP superintendent of police (SP) Tripti Bhatt said that the incident took place on May 29 when the victims boarded the Yog Nagri-Hubli Express from Yog Nagri Railway Station, Rishikesh. "During the journey, the accused - identified as Pratap Singh (49), a resident of Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh, and Kishan Yadav (35), a resident of Supaul, Bihar - befriended the group and offered them cold drinks spiked with sedatives. The victims lost consciousness and only realised they had been robbed after reaching Nizamuddin Railway Station in Delhi," she said.
"The accused fled with the women's mobile phones, cash, jewellery and other valuables. A case was registered at the Nizamuddin police station and later transferred to Dehradun GRP as a zero FIR. During the arrests, police recovered 159 lorazepam tablets from the possession of the accused," she further said.
The officer said that a joint team of the GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF) was formed to track down the suspects. "After extensive manual and digital surveillance, the team located the duo in Rishikesh and apprehended them on Wednesday evening," she said.
The accused have been charged under BNS Sections 123 (causing hurt by means of poison), 305(b) (theft committed in means of transportation), and 3/5 (common intention).
"Further investigation revealed that Pratap Singh has seven criminal cases registered against him in various police stations across Aligarh and Hathras districts," Bhatt added....
