2 dead, 2 feared drowned during Amavasya rituals in Sitapur
LUCKNOW, Sept. 22 -- Two boys drowned during a ritualistic bathing at a pond on the occasion of Amavasya in Sitapur's Khairabad area on Sunday, said additional superintendent of police (ASP) Alok Singh.
In a separate incident, two men were feared to have drowned during a fair held on the occasion in the Naimisharanya area of the same district on Sunday, said senior police officials.
In the Khairabad area, 14-year-old Pradeep Yadav and his 13-year-old cousin Vivek Yadav were bathing in the presence of other devotees when they slipped into deep waters and couldn't swim back to safety.
"Despite attempts by bystanders to rescue them, both teenagers drowned. Upon receiving the news, police rushed to the scene, retrieved the two with the help of locals, and sent them to a hospital. The doctors declared both teenagers dead on arrival," the ASP said.
In Naimisharanya, Manoj Yadav (28) and Sumit Yadav (30), both residents of Hanuman Nagar village, were suspected to have drowned in the Gomti while bathing near a newly constructed ghat, the inspector in-charge of Naimisharanya police station, Pankaj Tiwari, said.
He said the incident caused panic at the fair, but the police were able to maintain a law and order situation.
He said a search for the two men was still underway.
According to eyewitnesses, the two men were bathing at the ghat when they were drawn by the currents.
Locals attempted to rescue them but were unsuccessful.
In both instances, locals have demanded that the administration deploy permanent divers and strengthen security measures as large crowds gathered there during Amavasya....
