Meerut, Aug. 23 -- In a shocking case of mob violence, a 25-year-old labourer was beaten to death in Sambhal district, prompting police action against two constables accused of negligence and corruption. Superintendent of police (SP) Krishna Kumar Bishnoi has suspended Baberala police station constable Vineet Kumar and 112 constable Lavesh. A case has also been registered against Vineet for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs.1,000 from the labourers. Also, five people, including the contractor, have been arrested and sent to jail.. The incident occurred on August 18 in Baberala town of Gunnaur tehsil. The victim, Durgesh alias Yogesh Kumar, a resident of Nagla Ajmeri village, was lynched just 400 metres from Junawai police station. His brother Bhuvnesh was severely injured in the attack. The family tragedy deepened when their grandmother, Anar Devi, died of shock. The probe revealed that contractor Srinivas had engaged the labourers to lay a slab at a house in Baberala. After the work was completed, a dispute arose over payment of wages. The 112 police unit was called and all parties were taken to Baberala police station. There, constable Vineet Kumar allegedly assured the labourers of safe passage but demanded Rs.1,000 for the same. Instead of ensuring their safety, Vineet and the 112 police team dropped the labourers near Senjna Muslim village. Shortly after, contractor Srinivas, accompanied by around two dozen associates, launched a violent assault on the workers using sticks, rods, and iron bars. In the brutal attack, Yogesh was killed on the spot. Following SP Vishnoi's directions, SP (South) Anukriti Sharma recorded the statements of both suspended constables as well as survivor Bhuvnesh. Based on the inquiry, action was taken against the policemen. Confirming the action, SP Vishnoi said, "Both constables have been suspended for negligence. Additionally, a case has been registered against constable Vineet Kumar for extorting money on the pretext of providing security."
