Dehradun, Oct. 13 -- Uttarkashi Police arrested two men and recovered a large quantity of endangered herbs - 'Meda' and 'Panja' - from their possession. The collection of Meda (scientific name Polygonatum verticillatum) and Panja (Dactylorhiza hatagirea) from the wild is prohibited to prevent extinction from overexploitation of these endangered plant species. According to police officials, during a vehicle check on the Mori-Netwad Road near the Kunara intersection on Saturday, a police team intercepted a commercial vehicle (registration number UK 07 TD 1167). On inspection, 152 kilograms of Meda and 15 kilograms of Panja were found packed in separate bags in the vehicle. The accused, identified as Rajendra Singh (38), a resident of Jakhol village, and Surat Singh (46), a resident of Liwadi-- both under Mori police station limits in Uttarkashi district- had allegedly collected the herbs from the nearby forests and were on their way to Dehradun to sell them. Superintendent of police (SP) Uttarkashi Sarita Dobhal said, "We have seized the vehicle and the herbs, and registered a case against the duo under Sections 26, 41, and 42 of the Indian Forest Act."...
