Shillong, July 19 -- A 19-year-old girl was hacked to death by a man at Williamnagar in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills on Friday, police officers aware of the matter said, adding that a hunt is on to track down the accused who is currently absconding. Police have identified the accused as James R Sangma, a resident of Dawagre locality. However, they are yet to ascertain the motive of the murder, police said. According to East Garo Hills superintendent of police Stephen A Rynjah, Sangma asked the girl, a resident of Dawa Matchakolgre, to meet him. "The incident took place at Samgong. When she went to meet Sangma, he attacked her with an axe and killed her on the spot. A special team under the command of the additional superintendent of police, Williamnagar, and assisted by the DSP (HQ & Crime) as well as other officers has been formed to track down Sangma and arrest him," Rynjah said, adding that police are yet to register a case in this connection. Police have announced a cash reward in exchange for information leading to Sangma's arrest and have also assured to protect the identity of the informants.
