Meerut, Sept. 3 -- An FIR has been lodged against 150-180 unidentified people for vandalism and rioting at the Bhuni Toll Plaza on the Meerut-Karnal Highway, police said on Tuesday. The case, filed at Sarurpur police station by Amit Kumar, IT head of toll operator M/s Dharam Singh contractor, comes after a violent clash that followed the alleged assault of an Indian army soldier on August 17. According to the complaint, the mob damaged barrier booms, cameras, LCD displays, computer systems, reading sensors, booths and control room equipment, apart from breaking into offices and destroying furniture and air-conditioners. The toll plaza was made free, and operations remained disrupted for nearly six hours. The violence was triggered on August 17, when four men, including the soldier, traveling in a Brezza car (UP37W8504) from Shamli to Meerut clashed with toll staff after being asked to wait. The altercation turned violent, and the car occupants sustained injuries. Later that night, their supporters reached the plaza and assaulted toll employees. Police subsequently arrested eight people for the attack. SP (Rural) Rakesh Kumar Mishra said the entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras, which police are reviewing to identify suspects. "Further action is underway," he added. In the aftermath, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) slapped a Rs 20 lakh fine on the toll collection agency and terminated its contract. htc...
