Dehradun, July 22 -- The Uttarakhand Police has registered nearly 12 FIRs, arrested 17 people and booked 150 unidentified kanwariyas creating hooliganism and indulging in violence during the Kanwar yatra since July 11, according to the official data. Inspector general of police, Garhwal Range, Rajeev Swaroop said they have been dealing strictly with those creating hooliganism and vandalism during the Kanwar yatra, which started on July 11. "Our ongoing 'Operation Lagaam', which aims at identifying and taking action against those disrupting public order on the roads, has already shown significant results. We have issued challans to over 10,000 people. As per our standard operating procedures during the Kanwar yatra, we have implemented stricter measures this time to ensure a safe and peaceful yatra," Swaroop said. "We have registered around a dozen FIRs in Haridwar and Dehradun for acts of hooliganism, vandalism, and violence. Activities during the Kanwar yatra are being closely monitored. CCTV and drone footage are being used to take action against those disturbing public order," he said. "The Uttarakhand Police has deployed over 7,000 security personnel in order to ensure a peaceful, safe and organised Kanwar yatra. The deployment includes intelligence, paramilitary forces, Jal police, special task force, state disaster response force (SDRF), anti terrorism squad (ATS), Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC)," he said. Director general of police (DGP), Uttarakhand, Deepam Seth on July 10 said hooliganism in the name of faith will not be tolerated and dealt with strict action. "We are fully alert and committed to the peaceful, safe and systematic conduct of Kanwar yatra," he said. "We have deployed 3,000 policemen, 1,350 home guards and PRD, 15 companies of PAC, nine companies of paramilitary forces, nine teams of bomb disposal squad, four teams of anti-terrorist squad, 10 teams of SDRF, 10 teams of drones operating personnel, seven teams of jal police. The Kanwar yatra is being continuously monitored throughout the day through the control room with footage of more than 500 CCTV cameras," he added. He said the Neelkanth shrine area has been divided into a super zone, seven zones, and 23 sectors and the Haridwar Mela area into 16 super zones, 37 zones and 134 sectors. Apart from drones and CCTV cameras, social media monitoring team, STF and intelligence units have been specially activated to monitor suspicious activities. On July 15, the Uttarakhand high court took serious note of incidents of violence reported during the ongoing Kanwar yatra in the state and sought a detailed response from the state's DGP Seth and Panchayati Raj secretary Chandresh Kumar Yadav on how the state plans to manage conducting panchayat elections at a time when the state is witnessing huge influx of Kanwariyas in the ongoing Kanwar Yatra and prevailing monsoon conditions across the state. The court was hearing a PIL filed by Dehradun-based petitioner Baijnath, seeking rescheduling of upcoming panchayat elections in light of the Kanwar yatra and prevailing monsoon conditions across the state. DGP Seth assured the court that strict legal action was being taken against those involved in such incidents.
