LUCKNOW, May 9 -- A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Lucknow has sentenced six individuals, including two former assistant postmasters of Banda Head Post Office, to rigorous imprisonment ranging from seven to ten years in a 16-year-old case involving the misappropriation of over Rs 11 lakh in government funds, CBI officials said on Thursday. The court found all six guilty of misappropriating Rs 11,03,163 by using forged documents and making excess payments in RD accounts. The court handed 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to the five former postal employees and seven years to one private individual. Fines totalling Rs 4.45 lakh have also been imposed. The accused were involved in preparing fake documents and processing excess payments beyond the admissible amount in RD accounts, which led to a wrongful loss to the department of post, and a corresponding unlawful gain for themselves, a spokesman said. The case was registered by the CBI on June 6, 2009, following allegations of financial irregularities at Banda Head Post Office. The chargesheet was filed on June 15, 2010.
