16 booked in Nainital under Gangster Act over violence in polls
Haldwani, Aug. 25 -- Nainital Police have invoked the Gangster Act against a 16-member gang led by Amritpal alias Pannu, accused of spreading terror by firing during the recent Betalghat Block Pramukh Panchayat elections on August 14.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Prahlad Narayan Meena said the action follows an FIR lodged in the matter after one of the accused allegedly opened fire with a pistol during polling in Betalghat on August 14. "Taking the matter seriously, we have ensured strict legal action against those responsible for the violence," Meena said on Sunday.
He said after the incident, an FIR was registered at Betalghat police station against the accused .
"Police identified gang leader Amritpal, a resident of Roshanpur in Udham Singh Nagar, along with 15 of his associates", he said.
He said subsequently, invoking provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986, the police on August 23 registered a second case under Gangster Act against the accused and took Amrit Pal, Gurjit Singh and Pradeep Singh into custody on August 20....
