12 labourers injured in Chamoli landslide: DM
Dehradun, Aug. 3 -- A dozen labourers were injured after a landslide hit an under construction THDC's Vishnugad hydro-electricity project site near Helang in Chamoli district on Saturday morning.
The incident occurred at around 10.30 am, when the rocks began to roll down and the labourers ran away to save their lives.
Chamoli district magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said, "Twelve people sustained injuries in the incident. Eight of them were given first aid, while four were taken to hospital. One of them sustained a leg fracture, while another was taken to the higher centre for an MRI examination." "Around 300 workers were present at the project site, while 70 were present on the spot where the incident occured," added the district magistrate.
A release from the Chamoli police stated, "On August 2, the Jyotirmath police station received information about a rockfall incident at an under-construction THDC site in Helang. Upon receiving the alert, a police team from the Jyotirmath station immediately rushed to the spot. According to preliminary information, around 40-50 labourers were working at the dam site when, at around 11 am, a section of the hill broke off and collapsed, injuring 12 workers. After first aid was provided to eight of them, they were sent back to the camp. Four workers who sustained serious injuries were referred to the government hospital in Pipalkoti," the statement added.
One of the injured workers has got a fracture in the leg, while another labourer on whom a spinal MRI needs to be done is being taken in an ambulance to a hospital in Srinagar in Pauri district, said the district magistrate. He added that the MRI report will reveal the severity of the worker's injury.
All workers have been evacuated from the site and construction work has been temporarily halted, police officers aware of the matter added....
