MEERUT, Aug. 15 -- A local court in Bulandshahr district has convicted 12 of the 15 accused in the murder of 13-year-old Wahid Ghazi in 2012, a case that triggered years of violent clashes between the Gaddi and Qureshi communities in the city. Three of the accused died during the trial. The court will pronounce the sentence on August 19. Defence lawyer Advocate Rukan Singh Payal said the court on Thursday found all surviving accused guilty and reserved its judgment. Police took them into custody immediately after the pronouncement. According to police, the incident occurred on August 24, 2012, when a dispute over a motorcycle skidding led to members of the Qureshi community allegedly opening fire, killing Wahid Ghazi of Mohalla Ruknsarai and injuring Meena, wife of Nasru, and Rashid, son of Nasru. The killing sparked large-scale violence in Bulandshahr, forcing markets, including Ansari Road, to shut. Heavy police and provincial armed constabulary (PAC) deployment continued in sensitive areas for days. Police had named Khalil, Chaman, Rahis, Shahid, Ashraf, Anwar, Wahid, Sajid, Haji Asmohammad, Farid, and Yusuf among the accused. During the trial, Yad Mohammad, Yusuf, and Rahis died. The remaining 12 have now been convicted. Wahid's murder was followed by the killing of Hamid, son of Haji Ishar of the Qureshi community, allegedly by members of the Gaddi community. In this case, the court had earlier sentenced Majid, Baksha, Ishtkar, Naved, Rashid, Mulla Farooq, Tausif, and Mulla Jamil to various prison terms. Despite convictions in both cases, police say violent flare-ups between the two communities continue in the city....
