Lucknow, Feb. 17 -- The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday informed the state legislative council that the manufacture, storage, sale and use of Chinese manjha (synthetic kite string) had been banned in the state in compliance with orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
Replying to a starred question by MLC Devendra Pratap Singh during Question Hour, the government said the NGT, through its orders dated December 14, 2016, had directed a ban on Chinese manjha due to its hazardous impact on human life, birds and the environment.
The House was informed that as per reports received from the deputy commissioner of police (Headquarters) and the chief medical officer, Lucknow, 104 injuries linked to Chinese manjha were reported in Lucknow over the last two years, up to February 5, 2026.
The government further stated that, acting under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the environment department issued orders on May 1, 2017, directing district magistrates, police commissioners, senior superintendents and superintendents of police to strictly prohibit the manufacture, storage, use and sale of synthetic manjha, nylon kite strings and Chinese manjha across both urban and rural areas of state.
The response was tabled during Question Hour though could not be taken up for discussion.
