MEERUT, Aug. 26 -- At least 10 people, including two children, were killed and 41 others were injured after a truck rammed into a tractor-trolley carrying pilgrims in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, police said. According to police, the incident took place around 2.10am near the Arnia bypass on the Bulandshahr-Aligarh border when a canter truck hit the tractor-trolley from behind, causing it to overturn. The tractor-trolley, with 61 passengers, was travelling from Rafatpur village in Kasganj district to Jaharpeer in Rajasthan for a pilgrimage. "Eight people died on the spot, and one more succumbed to injuries during treatment," senior superintendent of police (rural) Dinesh Kumar Singh said. Later, another person died during treatment. Of 41 injured, 12 are minors, with three of them currently on ventilator support. Police identified the deceased as tractor-trolley driver EU Babu (40), Rambeti (65), Uma Shanker (65), Chandni (12), Dhaniram (40), Mokshi (40), Shivansh (6), Yogesh (50), Vinod (45) and Lekhraj (40) -- all from Kasganj district. Their bodies have been sent for autopsy, police said. UP CM Yogi Adityanath condoled the deaths and announced ex gratia of Rs.2 lakh each for families of the deceased and Rs.50,000 for injured. "The chief minister has directed the district administration officials to immediately transport the injured to the hospital and ensure their proper treatment," the UP chief minister's office (CMO) said on X. Singh said that the tractor-trolley involved in the accident had been modified with two decks to accommodate the large group, despite a ban on using such vehicles for passenger transport in Uttar Pradesh. The section 172 of the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicles Rules, 1998, says, "No trailer manufactured in India and intended to be used as a transport vehicles shall be registered unless its design has been approved by the Transport Commissioner."
