1.5 kg hairball removed from teen girl's stomach in Ayodhya
Ayodhya, Nov. 14 -- In a rare and complex surgery, Ayodhya-based surgeon Dr Meraj Khan successfully removed a 1.5-kilogram hairball from the stomach of a 16-year-old girl suffering from Trichobezoar, a medical condition caused by the accumulation of ingested hair.
The patient, Laxmi, a resident of Bikapur tehsil in Ayodhya, had developed the unusual habit of eating her own hair over time. This led to the formation of a massive hairball inside her stomach, which caused severe abdominal discomfort and other complications. According to Dr Khan, the girl's family had consulted several doctors earlier, but she was repeatedly referred to larger medical centres in metropolitan cities due to the complexity of the case. "The operation lasted nearly two hours. We successfully removed a bunch of hair weighing about 1.5 kilograms from her stomach," said Dr. Khan, who performed the surgery at Fatima Hospital, Ayodhya. He explained that Trichobezoar results from the habit of eating hair, a behavior often linked to Trichotillomania. The condition is most commonly seen among children and adolescents, particularly females, and is associated with psychological conditions such as anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Pica (eating non-food items) and intellectual disabilities....
