1 more body found in Rudraprayag accident; toll now 5
Dehradun, June 29 -- The body of a 19-year-old woman was recovered from Srinagar Dam on Saturday, which marked the third day of the search operation after eight people went missing as a bus with 20 on board veered off the highway in Rudraprayag and plunged into the Alaknanda river on Thursday morning, officers aware of the matter said.
Eight people were thrown off the bus before it submerged in the river, and they were rescued, while three bodies were recovered on Thursday. One more body was found on Friday, they added.
The body of Mauli Soni, a resident of Surat in Gujarat, was recovered from Srinagar Dam, approximately 40km downstream of the accident site in Gholtir on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway, police added.
The rescue personnel who were involved belonged to the national disaster response force (NDRF), state disaster response force (SDRF), police and fire departments, they added.
Rudraprayag superintendent of police Akshay Prahlad Konde said, "The search for the missing people continued on the third day on Saturday. The Pauri Garhwal police recovered the body of the 19-year-old woman from Srinagar Dam. The panchayatnama and postmortem examination of the deceased will be carried out at Srikot Base Hospital."
"The rescue teams are continuing the search for seven more missing people. Watchers have been deployed at various points along the river from the accident site to Srinagar (45km stretch of the river). The search operation is also assisted by boats and sonar equipment," he added.
On Thursday, the 31-seater bus veered off the highway in Gholtir area of Rudraprayag district and plunged into the Alaknanda river at around 7.50am. The bus was en route from Rudraprayag to Badrinath, officials said.
On Thursday, the three victims were identified as Vishal Soni (42) from Rajgarh in Madhya Pradesh, Dreamy (17) from Surat in Gujarat, Gauri Soni (41) from Rajgarh in Madhya Pradesh, police said.
The injured were taken to the district hospital in Rudraprayag from where four of them were referred to AIIMS Rishikesh.
An FIR was registered under sections 125 (endangering life or personal safety of others), 106 (causing death by negligence), and 281 (driving a vehicle negligently on a public road) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the accident....
