Lucknow, Aug. 1 -- A two-day young researchers' conference on "Studies in Humanities: Trends in Language, Literature, and English Language Education", organised by the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Regional Campus, Lucknow, concluded on Thursday. In his closing remarks prof Rajneesh Arora, director of the Regional Campus, Lucknow, stated that the humanities are not a luxury but a necessity in today's world. The valedictory session was graced by prof Omkar Nath Upadhyay, head of the department of English and Modern European Languages, Lucknow University, who spoke on the theme of Indian Classical and Contemporary Literature in Translation, highlighting how translation acts as both a linguistic and cultural bridge. He emphasised that texts such as the Vedas, Upanishads, Ramcharitmanas, and Mahabharata are not merely religious or literary works but embody India's knowledge traditions, which require careful, context-sensitive translation. He also noted the distinction between Western notions of history and the Indian concept of itihasa, calling it a blend of narrative, philosophy, and moral inquiry.
