'Saksham' workshop to help 40 cops better soft skills, professional conduct
LUCKNOW, Feb. 4 -- In a step towards strengthening professional and people-centric policing, the Uttar Pradesh Police Training Directorate, in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), has launched a three-day pilot training workshop titled "Saksham Policing" for 40 handpicked police personnel at the state police headquarters.
The workshop aims to enhance behavioural, social and technical competencies among police personnel through a structured, skill-based capacity-building programme. The initiative focuses on developing officers who are not only operationally efficient but also sensitive, communicative and adaptable in high-pressure public environments.
The programme was inaugurated by Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna, who emphasised that training is the foundation of both personal and professional growth. Addressing the participants, he said that the success of the world's leading institutions and security forces rest on continuous and high-quality training.
"You are among 40 officers selected from a force of nearly four lakh personnel. Treat this as an opportunity for growth, not a formality," the DGP said, urging participants to engage with an open mind and a positive attitude. He underlined that while knowledge and skills are important, attitude and behaviour ultimately define an officer's success. He also highlighted the role of effective verbal and non-verbal communication in shaping the public image of the police.
Referring to recent large-scale events such as the Mahakumbh and Magh Mela, the DGP noted that the UP Police received national and global appreciation for its conduct.
TISS vice-chancellor Prof Badri Narayan Tiwari said the collaboration seeks to bring human sensitivity into policing. "Indian policing operates under immense social pressures. Our goal is to support officers in becoming more empathetic, effective and humane," he said.
According to Rajeev Sabharwal, director general of the Police Training Directorate, the workshop focuses on behavioural communication, stress management, digital awareness, and balanced decision-making in modern policing scenarios.
The training model uses experiential learning methods, including case discussions and role play, and is structured around three key pillars: behavioural skills, operational soft skills, and real-life case simulations.
