LUCKNOW, Sept. 6 -- A Lucknow court has expressed strong displeasure over the shoddy investigation conducted by the state capital's Indira Nagar police in a case where the accused was arrested in one case of theft but the police slapped 12 more cases against him, showing the recovered amount in connection with 13 different thefts. Questioning the police's claim, the court said it's "ridiculous and unbelievable" that a thief could keep track of cash obtained from 13 thefts in their pocket for nine months without getting it mixed up. That's like expecting a superhero's memory skills. "I stole this much from here, and that much from there... let me just dig out the exact notes from my pocket." Additional sessions judge of Prevention of Corruption (PC) Court-I, Shyam Mohan Jaiswal, noted that the Indira Nagar police seemed to have conducted the investigation to suit their convenience, without any sense of responsibility. It's like they thought the thief had a PhD in loot management: "Okay, Rs.5000 from the bakery, Rs.4000 from the grocery store... let me just sort this out for you, officer." "Who knew thieves were accountants too?" The court expressed dismay that senior officials overseeing the investigation did not raise any objections to the investigating officer's approach. The court allowed bail to the theft accused Anil Kumar (31), who was lodged in Lucknow district jail in the matter since June 12, 2019, by submitting a bail bond of Rs 20,000 earlier this week. The court directed that a copy of the order be sent to the Police Commissioner and DGP for action against the investigating officer. The case demonstrates the need for a more thorough and responsible approach to investigation, the court said. The court also ordered to send the copy of the order to Lucknow Commissioner of Police (CP), Amrendra Sengar so that he could further instruct his subordinates regarding thorough investigations and fix police accountability....
