Haridwar, June 23 -- The forest department has increased surveillance and patrolling in Pauri Garhwal's Nainidanda block after a 60-year-old man was attacked by a leopard in Pauri Garhwal district, an official said on Sunday. "A leopard attacked Prem Singh, a local resident of Bakhroti village, when he was tending to his cows and goats in a cowshed on Saturday. He suffered facial injuries and was taken to the Nainidanda health centre, where he received treatment and was later discharged," said Subash Ghildiyal, range officer of the Deeva Range (Garhwal forest division). "Villagers are living in fear and are avoiding stepping out alone during early morning and nighttime hours," said Surendra Singh Rawat, a former village head. According to officials, leopard movement has been reported in Bakhroti, Basedi, Jamoon, Ghirauli and Cheempani villages over the past few days. Rawat added that it might have been the same leopard that took away one of Prem Singh's goats from the cowshed on Friday. "Patrolling has been intensified, and villagers are being sensitised about safety measures. All necessary steps are being taken to protect locals from wild animals," Ghildiyal said during his meeting with the injured villager. He added that due compensation will be given to the injured after an investigation. The forest department has appealed to residents to remain cautious and report any sightings or unusual animal behaviour immediately to authorities....
