LUCKNOW, Dec. 5 -- A month-long push under 'Operation Conviction' resulted in 106 offenders being convicted in 70 cases through November, police said on Thursday. Lucknow Commissioner of Police (CP) Amrendra K Sengar said the drive targeted serious crimes, including cases involving women, children and organised criminal activity, with efforts centred on speeding up evidence examination, witness production and courtroom follow-ups. Police records show that courts awarded life terms in several cases, mainly those related to sexual assault of minors, crimes against women and premeditated murder. Multiple POCSO cases concluded after long delays, with courts issuing strict sentences. In other cases, courts issued 10-year to 20-year rigorous imprisonment for grievous assault, gang activity, armed robbery and repeat violent conduct. In at least two matters registered under the Gangster Act.The CP said the initiative will continue in December, with the next phase focusing on quicker disposal of long-pending cases of sexual assault, organised crime and major financial fraud....
