'No KYV for new private cars after activation of FASTag from February 1'
New Delhi, Jan. 3 -- From February 1, the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification for new private cars will no longer be required once FASTag activation is completed, in a move aimed at reducing compliance burdens for motorists and preventing post-purchase harassment by banks, a senior official from the ministry of road, transport, and highways said.
Under the revised system, all ownership and identity verification must be completed before FASTag activation, after which banks will not be permitted to seek additional documents or initiate KYV checks, the official told HT.
"Once a FASTag is activated, the customer should not be disturbed. After activation, the customer no longer has the option to shift to another bank, so post-activation harassment is unfair," the senior official said, adding that the change is part of the government's broader ease-of-doing-business push.
Currently, 40 banks issue FASTags, enabling consumers to switch providers up to the point of activation. The official said users had complained of being repeatedly asked for documents even after activation, often resulting in temporary deactivation or disruption at toll plazas.
This revised rule applies only to private cars, and not to commercial vehicles such as trucks and multi-axle vehicles. "This is limited to normal passenger cars. Commercial vehicles have different risk factors and therefore, remain outside this relaxation," the official said.
For existing vehicles, KYV will no longer be a routine requirement either.
Verification will be triggered only if a complaint arises, such as cases involving loose tags, duplicate tags, or mismatches between the vehicle number and the FASTag.
In such instances, the issue will be flagged at the toll plaza, prompting corrective action.
KYV is a verification mechanism introduced to ensure FASTags are correctly mapped to vehicle registration numbers to prevent misuse and revenue leakage at toll plazas....
