'No Helmet, No Fuel' drive loses steam
PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 7 -- The 'No Helmet, No Fuel' campaign in Prayagraj seems to be fizzling out, with most of the two-wheeler riders continuing to get petrol without protective headgear. Out of 349 petrol pumps in the district, 314 are functional, and at many of them, two-wheeler riders -- including cops, lawyers and even minors -- can be seen purchasing fuel without any restriction.
Petrol pump owners and staff said they faced difficulties in enforcing the campaign without police support. "If we deny fuel, people start fighting. There should be an arrangement for police to counter unruly behaviour," said Santosh, a sales attendant at a pump in Dhoomanganj.
However, traffic inspector Amit Kumar insisted that the department was doing its job by issuing challans for violations of helmet rules, but the drive itself was the responsibility of the civil supplies department. "If they seek our services, we will provide support," he added.
Meanwhile, ADM (civil supplies) Vijay Sharma said that coordination between departments could not be established so far due to preparations for the Preliminary Eligibility Test (PET), 2025.
"Next week, I will hold a meeting with police, traffic, and RTO officials to chalk out a strategy. Police personnel will be deployed at all 314 functional petrol pumps to ensure strict implementation of the 'No Helmet, No Fuel' campaign," he said....
