'Man on the run in attempted murder case held in US Nagar'
Rudrapur, Dec. 12 -- A man allegedly absconding since May in an attempted murder case and carrying a bounty of Rs.25,000 was arrested late on Wednesday night, after an encounter with police in Gularbhoj area of Udham Singh Nagar, police said on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Gurbaj Singh alias Manu, 32, from village under Gadarpur police station, was arrested during a routine check, wherein he was signalled to stop, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manikant Mishra said.
"Instead of complying, he opened fire on the police team and tried to flee. He was later cornered by the team but again fired at the police. In retaliatory fire, he sustained a bullet injury in his leg," Mishra said.
Police said the accused fell to the ground after being hit and was subsequently overpowered. A motorcycle and an illegal pistol were recovered from himthey added.
Investigations revealed that Gurbaj was wanted in a case of attempted murder reported in May this year in his village. After remaining on the run for months, police had announced a Rs.25,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
SSP Mishra said the accused was a habitual offender with a criminal record extending across Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
"Seventeen cases, including attempt to murder, loot and Arms Act violations, have been registered against him. He was also involved in a 2019 firing incident targeting the station officer of Nanakmatta police station," he said....
