PATNA, June 30 -- Leader of the Opposition in Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav on Sunday emphasised that the Nitish Kumar-led government in Bihar was on its way out and if Mahagathbandhan was voted to power in the state, it would throw Waqf Act passed by the Narendra Modi government in the dustbin. Tejashwi said this while addressing Waqf Bachao, Dastoor Bachao (Save Waqf, Save Constitution) conference, organised by Imarat-e-Sharia under the chairmanship of Ameer-e-Shariat Maulana Faisal Wali Rahmani. Former Union minister and Congress leader Salman Khurshid and Independent Member of Parliament (MP) from Purnea Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav also addressed the gathering, which had participation of Muslim leaders from across the state. All leaders including those from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) strongly voiced their opposition to the Waqf Act and wore black bands, symbolising their protest against the legislation and their commitment to India's constitutional values. While underlining pluralistic independence struggle, citing figures like Ashfaqullah Khan and Bhagat Singh, Tejashwi Yadav said, "This country belongs to everyone." He fiercely opposed the Waqf Act, noting Rashtriya Janata Dal's (RJD) resistance in Parliament and courts, and vowed that a Mahagathbandhan government would repeal it. Accusing the BJP of disenfranchising marginalised communities, he criticised an Election Commission of India (ECI) notification to revise 8 crore voters' names in 25 days, urging the people to be vigilant and protect their voting rights and schemes like pensions and rations. Notably, Tejashwi escaped injury when an uncontrolled drone crashed into the podium, and continued his speech undeterred. Congress leader Khurshid said the Waqf Act was a threat to a way of life celebrated as 'unity in diversity', in India's pluralistic culture and added that the Congress party would continue opposing it vehemently at all platforms. Other Congress leaders and RS MPs Imran Pratapgarhi and Syed Nasir Hussain also spoke. The conference highlighted unified resistance against the Waqf Act and alleged BJP efforts to undermine democratic rights. It underscored the power of collective action to protect Waqf properties and India's constitutional framework. The conference is likely to position the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan to consolidate minority and marginalised voters by opposing the Waqf Act and highlighting the BJP's alleged attempts to disenfranchise communities through voter list revisions. An Imarat-e-Shariah representative said the event would set a narrative of protecting constitutional values and pluralism and would also counter the NDA's polarising tactics, strengthens Opposition unity, and amplifies Tejashwi's leadership, potentially swaying Bihar's diverse electorate, particularly its 17 per cent Muslim population and other backward groups, toward the Mahagathbandhan....
