Dehradun, Jan. 20 -- The Opposition Congress on Monday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the recent attack on its MLA Tilak Raj Behar's son, accusing the ruling party of being responsible for the collapse of law and order in the state. Saurabh Raj Behar, who is a councillor of the Rudrapur Municipal Corporation, was attacked by three masked men in Udham Singh Nagar on Sunday, raising concerns and triggering a fresh political debate. While cornering the BJP over the law and order situation, and condemning the attack on the MLA's son, Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UKPCC) president Ganesh Godiyal said: "Under BJP rule, the law and order situation in Uttarakhand has completely collapsed. Criminals are acting with impunity. The life-threatening attack by three masked criminals on Saurabh Raj Behar, son of Congress MLA from Kichha, Tilak Raj Behar, and councillor from Rudrapur Ward-39, is highly condemnable." "...I demand that the police immediately arrest the perpetrators of the attack and take the strictest possible action against them," he said. The incident comes on the heels of suicide of a farmer from Kashipur, and a recent murder of a man, who was shot dead by a BJP councillor in Haldwani. Former state Congress chief Karan Mahara said, "Under the BJP's misrule, Uttarakhand has fallen into the grip of fear, anarchy, and insecurity. The shooting death of a young man by a BJP councillor in Haldwani, the harassment of a farmer in Udham Singh Nagar that drove him to suicide, and the open display of weapons during the panchayat elections....all these incidents corroborate that the law and order has completely collapsed under the BJP rule." "Now, the attack by masked assailants on Saurabh Raj Behar shows that criminals have become so emboldened that they are not even sparing elected representatives," Mahara said. He said: "This government is neither able to prevent crime nor control criminals. As a result, a state of lawlessness prevails in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. This government has completely failed. The BJP government must take moral responsibility for this anarchy and take immediate and stringent action, otherwise, public trust will be completely shattered." Responding to the Opposition's attack, the BJP said the law and order is intact in the state and accused the Congress of maligning the image of Pushkar SIngh Dhami-led government. "The law and order is intact in the state. In every matter, the police have taken swift action...it will happen in this incident too. But the Congress is trying to malign in the image of the state. These isolated incidents don't reflect the situation," BJP state media in charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said....
