'Illegal' mosque, two mazaars demolished
Rudrapur, April 19 -- A mosque and two mazaars were demolished by the district administration on Saturday in the Gularbhoj area of Udham Singh Nagar, stating that the structures had been built on land belonging to the irrigation department.
Additional district magistrate Pankaj Upadhyay said notices had been issued to the concerned persons three months ago, asking them to furnish documents related to the ownership of the land.
"They failed to produce any valid documents despite repeated notices. The structures were demolished in the morning," he said.
Officials from the administration, police and irrigation department reached the Thanda Nala area in Gularbhoj and carried out the demolition using heavy machinery. The debris was later cleared from the site.
The matter was also taken to the high court, but no relief was granted. While the petitioners later approached the Supreme Court, officials said there was no stay on the religious structures in question.
No protest was reported during the demolition, officials said, adding that efforts to remove the alleged encroachments had been ongoing for a long time....
