'If we can't work in our own country then where can we?'
Dehradun, May 2 -- "If I can't work in my own country, where can I?," asked Iqbal Ahmed, one of the Kashmiri shawl sellers who were assaulted by three men in the popular hill station of Mussoorie on April 23, a day after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 innocent people.
Iqbal (25) has been visiting Uttarakhand to sell shawls for at least 7 years, and some like him even 20 years. Over two dozen Kashmiri shawl sellers left Mussoorie and Dehradun after his assault, said Ahmed.
He said, "In winters we visit Dehradun and Mussoorie in summers. We have lived in harmony with the locals for years. We never thought anything like such could happen to us. If we can't work in our country, where can we?"
He added, "We were assaulted on April 23, and the next day the policemen asked us to leave the area....saying they can't guarantee our safety. We hid overnight in an area near Mussoorie and took a bus next day in the morning from Dehradun to Jammu, from where we booked a taxi to reach home in Kashmir."
He said, "We left behind the items worth lakhs in our rented accommodations." Ahmed, the sole breadwinner in the family, said, "Why are Kashmiris being targeted for what the terrorists have done?"
He, however, expressed hope to come back to Uttarakhand and continue to sell shawls.
"I wish to come back and hope that the police and state government will take action against culprits.
A video is now going viral on social media in which three men can be seen assaulting and abusing Iqbal and another Kashmir shawl seller for selling their items on the Mall Road in Mussoorie. In the video, the men can be seen slapping the two Kashmiri shawl sellers and asking why they put their items on display despite their earlier warnings. htc...
