New Delhi, May 7 -- The Centre on Tuesday informed the Delhi high court that the Indian embassy in Indonesia was providing legal assistance to three Indians on death row in a drug-related case, and added that the Indian consulate has filed an "intent of appeal" to challenge the death sentence awarded by the Indonesian district court. In a statement made before a bench of justice Sachin Datta, the Union ministry of external affairs on Tuesday said that the vice consul of Indian consulate in Indonesia has filed a suo motu "intent to appeal" on May 2 after the high court had asked Centre to pursue the matter with their counterparts in Indonesia to ensure legal assistance is provided to the three Indian nationals. "The embassy has been assisting them. From July 2024 they (Indian embassy) have been in touch with the Indonesian authorities. The embassy has suo motu filed an intent to appeal on May 2 and now they (the nationals) have 14 days to prefer an appeal...," Dixit said.
