Meerut, Sept. 6 -- A police head constable was detained after he struck a couple on a motorcycle with a speeding car, killing the husband and critically injuring the wife, in Saharanpur's Behat on Thursday, police said. Eyewitnesses said the policeman, who's posted at the '112' wing of the police in Behat, was in an inebriated state when the accident occurred. The couple, Rashid and Munni, were going to a bank when the hatchback car, which was being driven at about 70 kmph, rammed them head-on, eyewitnesses said. The impact was intense enough to throw them nearly 10 feet away, they added. Severely injured, the couple was rushed to a community health centre (CHC) in an ambulance, which referred them to the district hospital. Rashid died around 11 p.m. His wife was said to be in critical condition. Alleging that Akash was in an inebriated state and that a liquor bottle was recovered from the car, locals created a ruckus until police intervened and took the constable into custody. Rashid worked as a daily wager and has five children. According to initial police findings, the car is owned by inspector Rameshwar Tomar, who is posted at Nanauta police station. Akash was reportedly on his way to receive the inspector when the accident took place. htc...
