'Cycle per Sunday' initiative promotes green mobility in Varanasi
Varanasi, April 6 -- A "Cycle per Sunday" event was organised at the Vishwanath Temple within Banaras Hindu University (BHU) under the Harit Safar Campaign, aiming to revive a culture of cycling among citizens while raising awareness about environmental conservation.
The initiative, led by Climate Agenda an organisation working on environmental issues under the leadership of Ekta Shekhar highlighted the importance of bicycles as one of the most accessible and zero-emission modes of transport. The campaign emphasised not only personal health benefits but also the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions in rapidly urbanising cities.
The event witnessed participation from members of the climate agenda team, along with interns and volunteers from BHU, Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya, and Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth. Students from the Master of Social Work (MSW) department played a particularly active role.
Addressing the gathering, Shekhar noted that the transport sector contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions. She pointed out that the increasing use of private motor vehicles in Indian cities has worsened air pollution and carbon output. In this context, she stressed that adopting non-motorised transport (NMT), such as cycling, is essential for creating healthier and more liveable urban spaces.
A key focus of the programme was to press for improved urban infrastructure, including dedicated cycling lanes, safe footpaths, and protected spaces for NMT users. Organisers underlined that without such measures, promoting cycling beyond relatively safe areas like the BHU campus remains both challenging and risky.
"If we can make cycling a part of our lifestyle even a fashion statement we can significantly reduce urban emissions and congestion. However, this vision can only be realised with the development of safe cycling infrastructure," she added.
The organisers hope to continue the initiative every Sunday, gradually building momentum towards a sustainable and environmentally conscious urban culture....
