VARANASI, May 28 -- State urban development minister AK Sharma on Tuesday instructed officials of Varanasi Nagar Nigam (VNN) to get all drains and sewers cleaned within the next two weeks, launch a campaign to remove encroachments from drainage systems, and take steps to make Varanasi dust-free. Sharma said this while holding chairing a review meeting of the urban development department at the Circuit House Auditorium in Varanasi on Tuesday. He also directed to develop memorials near the residences of the city's great personalities and Padma awardees as a tribute to them, along with undertaking other beautification projects in their memory. Sharma directed that within the next 15 days, 100% cleaning of all drains and sewers must be completed, with timely removal of silt. He further directed that notices must be issued in areas where encroachments have been made on drains. If the encroachments are not voluntarily removed, officials should launch a campaign to clear them. He also suggested planting grass along road tracks or developing pathways as needed and emphasising efforts to make Varanasi dust-free.
