Kolkata, Dec. 19 -- West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that her government would rename its job guarantee programme after Mahatma Gandhi, in an announcement coming on a day the Lok Sabha passed a bill that seeks to replace the two-decade-old Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA.) "I feel ashamed that they have decided to remove Mahatma Gandhi's name from the NREGA programme, because I too belong to this country. We are now forgetting even the Father of the Nation," Banerjee said. On Thursday, the Lok Sabhapassed the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, or VB-G RAM G Bill, 2025 amid strong protest by the opposition. "We will now rename the Karmashree scheme of our state after Mahatma Gandhi. We are providing 75 days of work under this scheme. We are not beggars. We only want respect and nothing else. If you don't give respect to Gandhiji we will give him the due respect," she added, without naming anyone.htc...
