New Delhi:, June 2 -- From a new building with state-of-the-art facilities to a paperless and greener complex, Indian Parliament has seen a major transformation in the recent years. One issue, however, continues to challenge the authorities: monkey menace. To tackle the challenge of the rambunctious simians, Lok Sabha authorities have roped in a total of nine ape handlers, with each being assigned a designated area to oversee. An internal circular issued by Lok Sabha officials on May 27 has provided details on how to contact these handlers on an emergency basis. "In order to control the monkey menace in the Parliament estate, officers/ staff may contact. ape handlers on their mobile phones or through the Parliament Communication control room," the circular stated. Two handlers, according to the circular, have been assigned the charge of the main entrance of the Parliament estate at Vijay Chowk. Two monkey handlers have been posted at the gate number 3 and the north utility block, while two handlers are given the charge of Parliament House annexe and its extension - the office blocks that are also used for holding meetings of all standing committees. One ape handler each will oversee the Old Parliament building (Samvidhan Sadan), Parliament library building, and the newly-created Prerna Sthal, where all statues have been shifted. The power corridors in the heart of the national capital are no strangers to monkey menace. Even as many public buildings and offices have ape handlers accompanied by langoors or Semnopithecus to scare away the monkey, the menace is far from over. In some buildings or shops near Central Vista, people have put pictures of langoors to scare monkeys. In 2019, then Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Rakesh Sinha was bitten by a monkey while another MP refused to take possession of a sprawling bungalow at a stone throw away from Parliament as a troop of monkey had made the large fruit-bearing trees on the campus their happy hunting ground. During the Congress-led UPA era, then Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee had written to defence minister AK Anthony to catch simians that regularly destroyed the former's kitchen garden....
