Valley records fresh snowfall
Srinagar, Dec. 24 -- The weather improved across Kashmir and Ladakh on Tuesday after fresh overnight snowfall over some mountainous areas, officials said on Tuesday.
The meteorological centre in Srinagar said that there was light snowfall over a few higher reaches of the valley. "Light rainfall was also recorded at a few places," a J&K MeT official said.
After fresh overnight rains in Srinagar, the sun shone briefly in the afternoon in the capital city. The minimum temperature in Srinagar on Monday night was recorded at 2.7 degrees Celsius, down from 4 degrees Celsius the night before and 5.1 notches above the season's normal, according to the officials. Other places in the valley also registered above-normal minimum temperatures ranging from 3.8 to 5.6 degrees Celsius.
The tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam, in south Kashmir, recorded sub-zero temperatures, with the mercury settling at minus 2.2 degrees Celsius and minus 0.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.
In south Kashmir, Qazigund recorded a low of 3.2 degrees Celsius and Kokernag 2.8 degrees Celsius.
Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of 2.4 degrees Celsius.
After prolonged dry weather conditions since the beginning of November, the Himalayan valley and Ladakh received widespread light snowfall over the mountains and light rains in plains since Saturday night breaking the dry spell.
The precipitation has rejuvenated the water resources in the region and covered the upper slopes with snow, fascinating the visitors and renewing hope among the people for a boost in tourist activities.
Weather experts say that the intensity and depth of snowfall was more in north Kashmir since Sunday. "The upper reaches of north Kashmir have received a heavy spell of snowfall during the last 48 hours with accumulation crossing 3 feet at several places including Sadhna Top," said Faizan Arif, an independent weather spotter.
The weather offices of J&K and Ladakh have predicted another spell of snowfall on the year end.
"The weather improved significantly in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal. In Ladakh, it's sunny. Next Western Disturbance of moderate intensity is likely to affect Ladakh and J&K during December 30th to January 1. Till that time, expect warmer days and colder nights," said MeT director of Ladakh, Sonam Lotus.
The MeT Srinagar stated that the weather in J&K will be partly cloudy between December 23 and 29.
"Moderate to dense fog expected over plains of Jammu division during next five days," the MeT said in an update.
"From December 30 to Jan 1, there is a possibility of light rain in plains and light snow over higher reaches at scattered places," the update said....
