India, June 26 -- Black holes are in the news again. The concept took its present form over nearly fifty years after Einstein displaced Newton's concept of a force acting at a distance, with curved space (and time!). The theory predicted a surface giving a one-way ticket for matter falling in, and even for light - hence the blackness. This surface is called the "event horizon" because we don't see events inside from where we are (safely outside!). Astronomers long believed that this was the ultimate fate of a massive star after it ran out of nuclear fuel. There were strong supporting arguments and successful models of observed objects, but direct evidence remained elusive....
