Dharamshala, Aug. 7 -- As heavy rainfall continues to batter Himachal Pradesh, 537 roads, including four national highways, remain blocked across the state on Wednesday, with 314 of them in Mandi district alone. The Chandigarh-Shimla national highway (NH-5) was blocked for four hours after a landslide at Chakki Mod in Solan district after heavy rain in the region around 8am on Wednesday, police said. Though traffic was partially restored on the route, long traffic jams on both sides of the highway delayed the supply of essential items to Solan and Shimla in the morning. The police said traffic was being allowed to ply on one side of the road after it was cleared of debris at multiple locations between Parwanoo town and Solan. Restoration work has been slow amid falling debris. The highway is undergoing upgrades, including four-laning, to cut travel time. A major landslide near Jogni Mata Temple and Dwada again blocked the Mandi-Kullu stretch of Chandigarh-Manali National Highway (NH-21). The stretch was blocked at multiple locations on Tuesday also. "Alternate route via Kamand-Kataula is open for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs)," said a police official. The NH-003 (Mandi-Dharampur) via Kotli also remained blocked at Banog. In Kullu district, where 117 roads remained blocked, NH-305 was blocked at Jhed (Khanag) due to a landslide and an alternate route via Kandugad was open for LMVs. In Kinnaur district, NH-05 was blocked near Ribba Nala. The stretch was also blocked at Nigulsari due to landslide, however, the road was reopened for traffic later in the day. The Kalka-Shimla heritage toy train service was suspended for the day in view of the inclement weather and falling debris. All six scheduled trains were cancelled due to track being blocked at several places by landslides. Restoration work is underway on the route. The state capital witnessed heavy traffic jams amid the rain. A landslide crushed four vehicles in Shimla's Tutu, while in Baddi, a bridge linking Dhela panchayat to Dawni Industrial Area has cut off connectivity to industrial zones. State revenue minister Jagat Singh Negi said, "The state has seen intense rainfall over the past two days that has left infrastructure damaged." Since the monsoon arrived on June 20, Himachal has incurred a loss of more than Rs.1,900 crore in rain-related incidents. "The assessment of agriculture and horticulture has not been completed. In such a situation, the figure will only increase," he said. Due to very high turbidity at the water sources and seeing the weather predictions, there will be disturbance in the water supply schedule in Shimla for the two to three days/ till floods recede. Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) has urged the citizens to use water judiciously. The inclement weather prompted the closure of educational institutions at many places in the hill-state on Wednesday. In Shimla district, schools remained closed for Wednesday in Theog, Chopal, Kumarsain, Rampur, Sunni, Jubbal and Dodra Kawar. Schools were also closed for a day in Mandi's Sundernagar and Karsog subdivisions. Himachal Pradesh education minister Rohit Thakur said that over 300 schools in the state have been damaged during the current monsoon season. "As per preliminary assessment, the education sector has suffered a loss of nearly Rs.30 crore," Thakur said. Thakur said the department is actively monitoring the situation. "In some regions, a two-week monsoon break will begin from tomorrow," Thakur said. Since the onset of the monsoon in Himachal Pradesh on June 20, as many as 199 people have lost their lives so far.
